An assessment on how I used Dewey's model of reflection to overcome my tardiness in class.

Prior to the start of university, I was accustomed to sleeping late nights due to staying up late to play video games and staying out late with my friends in the wee hours of the morning for supper, etc. This has led to me waking up at as late as 1 pm in the afternoon. I knew that this behavior would impact my academics adversely. Which has led me to apply Dewey's model of reflection to overcome my missing class.

Ideal: To be able to wake up early in the morning so that I was able to attend lectures on time. Not only that, but I would be fully awake to pay attention to the lecture too.

Reality (gap): After my polytechnic ended, I had grown more accustomed to late nights, spending time with friends, or playing video games. If I had not kicked this habit once school started, I would miss out on lectures due to being tardy for class either that or just sleep through the whole lesson.

Causes/Conditions: Due to the holidays, I had become free to enjoy late-night gaming sessions or spend time with friends later at night, which had led to an irregular sleep cycle. There was no school schedule to inhibit my freedom.

Effects/Results: I had started waking up as late as 1pm in the afternoon. This had led me to miss out on the first day of the bridging course that was created to help students refresh their memory on math and physics. This has caused worry that the same would happen when the trimester started.

Goal: To ensure that I woke up on time, I had to reset my sleep schedule to prepare myself for the coming school term.

Possible Changes:

I replanned with my friends late at night to earlier in the morning, as this would still allow me to meet up with them while forcing me to wake up earlier in the morning.

To reduce the time I spent gaming after dark, I had left my phone charging in the other room so that I would not be able to lie on my bed while using my phone at the same time, allowing me to sleep instead.

When I did spend time with my friends at night, I would excuse myself and head back home first if it got too late

Testing the hypothesis (solution): I tested these changes over the course of a few weeks, tracking my gaming time and my sleep schedule.

Outcome of the change: This has led to me being able to sleep around 10 pm, which still allows me to wake up later in the morning to meet up with my friends who had stayed out late, allowing me the best of both worlds.
